Parole is the early release of a prisoner from State prison to community-based supervision.
- The State's Board of Parole is responsible for parole issues pertaining to individuals after their release from State prison.

Probation is a sentence of community-based supervision imposed by the court. It may follow a period of incarceration in a City jail.
- New York City's Department of Probation is responsible for Adult Probation Supervision and Juvenile Probation Supervision.

Parole officers develop a supervision plan and evaluate community adjustment. They will step in if the parolee's behavior threatens themselves or the community.

The parole officer works with a supervisor to determine when to take delinquency action. They also work to ensure that people released from prison by order of the Board of Parole and by statute live freely in the community without breaking the law.
