If you're a general contractor seeking permits to build 1-, 2-, or 3-family homes, you must register with the Department of Buildings (DOB). DOB will only approve building permits to registered general contractors for these projects.

In order to become a registered General Contractor, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be able to read and write in English.
  • Have good moral character so as to not adversely impact upon fitness to perform the duties and responsibilities of a General Contractor.
  • Pass a background investigation.

Unregistered general contractors who are found building 1-, 2-, or 3-family homes may face violations, stop work orders, criminal charges, and/or seizure of vehicles and construction tools.

You must submit original documentation in-person to the DOB’s Licensing & Exam Unit, Monday through Friday by appointment only.
