You don't have to be the registered owner of the vehicle to make a parking ticket or camera violation payment. Anyone can pay your violations for you.

Fines

Camera Violations

  • Bus lane camera: If the date of the violation (not the date of the NOL) was on or after June 24, 2019, the fine starts at $50. If the date of the violation was before June 24, 2019, the fine is $115.
  • Red light camera: $50
  • Speed camera: $50

Note: if the NYPD issued you a bus lane violation that is yellow, it is a moving violation and the fine is $150. For more information about moving violations, go to the Traffic Ticket page.

Parking Tickets

The amount you owe depends on the violation code and where in the City you parked. The violation code is located on the front of the ticket. You can get information about the code on your parking ticket, what it means, and how much each type of parking violation costs.

Get parking ticket code descriptions and fine amounts.

Penalties

You have 30 days from the date of the parking ticket or camera Notice of Liability (NOL) to pay the fine or request a hearing. After 30 days, penalties and interest will begin to be added. If the violations go into judgment, additional enforcement actions may be taken.

Twenty days after a parking ticket is issued or the date of the NOL, the Department of Finance (DOF) will send a Pre-Penalty Notice of Unpaid Violation to the address on file at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for the registered owner of the vehicle. This letter reminds owners about an outstanding violation on a plate registered to them and gives instructions on how to pay or request a hearing. Make sure to keep your address up to date with the DMV to ensure that you receive these notices in the future.

Parking Tickets

  • After 30 days, an additional $10 is added to the fine amount.
  • After 60 days, an additional $20 is added to the fine and first penalty.
  • After 90 days, an additional $30 is added to the fine and both penalties.
  • After about 100 days, the violation is entered into judgment and 9% simple interest per year is then added to the total amount due. Each month, one-twelfth of the 9% of the unpaid judgment is added to the amount due, until the outstanding amount is paid.

Camera Violations

  • After 30 days, a $25 penalty will be added.
  • After 65 days, a Final Notice is mailed.
  • After about 75 days, the violation is entered into judgment and 9% simple interest per year is then added to the total amount due. Each month, one-twelfth of the 9% of the unpaid judgment is added to the amount due, until the outstanding amount is paid.

If you believe you shouldn't have been charged interest or were charged an incorrect amount of interest, you can request a penalty adjustment. For more information, visit the Parking Ticket or Camera Violation Assistance page.

Enforcement Actions

Booting and Towing

When the combined judgment debt owed for parking tickets and camera violations exceeds $350 for all vehicles registered to the same owner, any of those vehicles may be booted or towed. For example, if you own two vehicles and have an $80 bus lane camera violation in judgment on one car and $271 in parking violations in judgment on the other car, either car may be booted.

If your vehicle is booted, a booting fee and marshal or sheriff fees will be added to the judgment amount owed.

If you don't resolve your judgment debt within 48 hours of being booted, or if your vehicle meets the criteria for an immediate tow, then a tow fee will be added. Vehicles that remain in the tow pound will be charged a storage fee after the first day they are brought into the pound.

If you don't pay the total amount owed, the vehicle will be auctioned. To learn more about booting and towing, visit the Booted Vehicle or Find a Towed Vehicle page.

Other Enforcement Actions

In addition to booting and towing, DOF may take other enforcement actions against the registered owner of the vehicle.

DOF may:

  • Garnish your wages
  • Restrain your bank accounts
  • Defer or suspend your NY State vehicle registration
  • Place a lien against your real property
  • Refer your account to a collection agency

You can pay a parking ticket or camera violation online using CityPay.

As of June 20, 2021, DOF has rebranded the parking payment site as part of CityPay. All of the functionality remains the same.

Note: you can't pay a parking or camera violation online if your vehicle has been booted or towed. To learn how to pay violations when a vehicle has been booted, visit the Booted Vehicle page. For towed vehicles, visit the Towed Vehicle Reclaim from Marshal or Sheriff page.

How to Pay

  1. Go to the CityPay website. Using Firefox isn't recommended because you may not be able to input all of the requested information.
  2. Search for the violations you owe using the ticket or Notice of Liability (NOL) number or your license plate number.
  3. Decide how much you want to pay. The full fine and penalty amounts are displayed, but you can make a partial payment by entering the amount you want to pay.
  4. Choose your payment method and enter all of the required information. Make sure that your billing address matches the address for your credit or debit card and the Card Verification Value (CVV) is correct, or the payment won't go through.
  5. Review the payment information carefully before submitting. You can't cancel, change, or delay the payment once it's been submitted.
  6. Submit your payment.
  7. Print the receipt screen or confirmation email for your records.

Payment Methods

You can pay online using:

  • Credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or foreign cards with CVVs)
  • Debit card (Visa or MasterCard logo)
  • Pre-paid or gift card (Visa or MasterCard logo)
  • Electronic check
  • PayPal
  • Venmo

Service Fee

A 2% service fee is added for credit, debit, pre-paid or gift card, PayPal, and Venmo payments. There's no fee for payments by electronic check.

Proof of Payment

When you pay online and your payment goes through, you'll get a payment receipt screen, and if you provided an email address you'll also get a confirmation email. Make sure to print both for your records as proof of attempted payment.

Each shows:

  • Your receipt number
  • Each ticket and/or violation you paid
  • The total amount you paid

If your credit card, PayPal, or Venmo payment didn't go through, you won't get a receipt. Instead, you'll see a message that says "Unable to process payment. Declined."

The confirmation email will be from noreply@finance.nyc.gov. Keep this email for future reference. If you don't see the email, check your Junk or Spam folder.

If you submit an e-check payment that is later returned as a no-good check, DOF will send a notification of this return to the email address that you provide at the time of payment. The original amount due will be reinstated, as well as any late fees, penalties, or booting-related fees that may have been in place at the time of your original payment. Additional penalties and interest will continue to accrue until a new payment is received.

Processing and Post Date

Online payments are processed each day at midnight. If you search for a ticket or violation you paid earlier the same day, you should see "Payment in Process" on the results page. The payment date will be the date that you completed your online transaction. It may take 2 to 4 business days for it to be reflected in the system.

Payments made online can't be cancelled, changed, or delayed.

Credit and debit card payments over $100,000 and e-check payments over $1 million will be split into smaller amounts for processing and will appear on the statement as multiple items.

    Payment Plan

If you have parking or camera violation judgment debt, you may be eligible to set up a payment plan so you can make a series of smaller payments over time instead of paying the full amount all at once.

If you stay current with the plan’s payments, your vehicle(s) won’t be subject to towing, booting, and other enforcement actions. Interest continues to accrue on your outstanding liability while the payment plan is in effect.

To be eligible for a payment plan, you must:

    • Have parking ticket, bus lane, red light, or speed camera violation judgment debt
    • Have a valid vehicle registration
    • Be the registered owner of the vehicle, the owner’s court-appointed agent or the lessee of a vehicle who has been designated as liable for judgment summonses by the vehicle’s lessor.
    • Agree to include all open parking ticket judgments not already covered by an active payment plan.
    • Agree to a payment plan length of 24 months or fewer. (If the total amount in judgment is less than $350, the payment plan length is 60-Days.)
    • Agree to pay the balance owed on all open judgment violations. If you wish to dispute any tickets in a hearing, you must do so before the payment plan begins.
    • Pay 20% or more of the total amount due at the time you enter into the agreement.
    • Pay all outstanding booting, towing, and related fees in full if your car has been booted or towed.

You can learn more on the Parking Ticket or Camera Violation Payment Plan page.

    Military Service Member Debt Relief

If you are an active member of the military (or a representative of one), you can request relief from parking ticket and camera violation judgments.

Debt relief is provided under the Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act.

To be eligible, you must be one of the following:

    • An active member of the military
    • A reservist ordered to report for induction or for military service
    • A service member's spouse or registered domestic partner
    • A service member's dependent, such as an unmarried child under the age of 18, an unmarried child and full-time student between ages 18 to 23, or others for whom the service member provided at least 50% of their support for 180 days before the date of the application

You can learn more on the Debt Relief for Military Service Members page.
