They cost 25 cents to use and are open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) accepts reports of damaged or dirty automatic public toilets. Problems may include broken glass, flooding, graffiti, broken or poor lighting, structural damage, lack of supplies, or operating issues.

A private company installs and maintains automatic public toilets based on agreements with the City. DOT reports complaints to the contractor and monitors the contractor's work.

The City works closely with local community boards and other parties to identify new sites for automatic public toilets. Toilets can only be placed in areas that meet specific structural requirements, so land surveys are an important part of the selection process.

Operating details for the automatic public toilet are as follows: 

  • Fee of 25 cents for up to 15 minutes applies.  
  • After 12 minutes of use, an alarm and red flashing lights go off indicating there are three minutes before the door opens. 
  • An automated system controls the door and prevents unauthorized entrance.
  • Once a user has exited, the doors will close and a 90-second automatic cleaning cycle will begin.  During the cleaning cycle, the interior surfaces are cleaned and dried.
  • Once the self-cleaning process is complete, a new user can have access.
