Free asthma home inspections are available for New York City residents with asthma, to identify asthma triggers or other health hazards in the home.

To qualify for this free service, you must:

  • Rent your home and live within the 5 boroughs
  • Have a mold, mouse, rat or roach problem in your home
  • Have a medical diagnosis of moderate persistent or severe persistent asthma

If you or your child does not have asthma, and you are calling about pests or mold in your home and live in a building with three or more apartments, you can have your complaint forwarded to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

The NYC Asthma and Pest Control Study is a 2-year project being conducted jointly by the City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Montefiore Medical Center.

The goal of the study is to understand the health benefits of integrated pest control activities in the homes of children in the Bronx who have asthma.

If you live in East Harlem and have children under 18, you can receive the following services from the East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence:

  • Individual and group sessions on how to manage symptoms, medications and conditions that trigger attacks
  • Case management
  • Referrals to free pest management
  • Mold removal and housing repairs
  • Long-term support for severely affected children

All services are free and are offered to walk-in customers.  Appointments can also be made with asthma counselors.

Children who live in the Bronx and have an asthma-related hospitalization or emergency visit at one of three H +H acute care hospitals in the Bronx will be connected to a social worker who will link the family with a Community Health Worker. The three H + H acure care hospitals are Lincoln, Jacobi, and North Central Bronx.

The Social Worker or Community Health Worker will:

  • Link child to a primary care provider if they do not already have one
  • Schedule them for a home visit and inspection by the CHW
  • Arrange for Integrated Pest Management services if pests are identified in the home 
  • Work with the child’s parent and primary care provider to complete the Asthma Medication Administration Form to inform the school medical staff of the child’s asthma diagnosis and to allow for asthma management at school
  • Connect the family to health insurance enrollment assistance (including NYC Care) and other necessary social services

Eligibility

Children ages 5-17 years old that live in the Bronx who have an asthma related ED visit or hospitalization at Lincoln Hospital beginning in early September, and at Jacobi or North Central Bronx Hospitals starting in November 2019. The program is limited to children that live in the Bronx.
