You must have a permit from the Department of Transportation (DOT) in order to install a canopy. A canopy is a supported cover located over the sidewalk and is held up by poles embedded into the sidewalk.

An awning is a freestanding cover located over the sidewalk that is attached to a building and is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Buildings (DOB).
