School Transfer for information about transferring to another school

You can get information about services and programs available to help students graduate high school.

The City offers small high schools to help students graduate if they dropped out or are behind in credits. Transfer High Schools are designed to help students graduate and find career and college opportunities.

To attend a Transfer School, you must:

Be between the ages of 15 and 21
Have completed one year of high school

Each Transfer School has its own admission requirements. You can get more information about these schools by contacting your guidance counselor or by going online.

You can get assistance if you are concerned your child will not graduate or be promoted.

You should contact your child's guidance counselor or teacher. If the problem cannot be resolved within the school, the Department of Education will provide additional assistance.

Young Adult Borough Centers (YABC) help overage and under-credited high school students get a high school diploma.

The Centers offer evening programs to students who have some of the credits they need to graduate, but might be considering dropping out because they are behind or they have adult responsibilities that make attending school in the daytime difficult.

To be eligible, you must:

Be 17 to 21 years old (you must have turned 17 in the last school year completed)
Have a minimum of 17 credits that count toward high school graduation
Be in your fifth year (or more) of high school
Be enrolled in a New York City high school

You can earn a high school diploma from your high school once you have earned all of your credits and passed exams required for graduation at the YABC.

Through the Learning to Work (LTW) Program the City offers post-secondary education and employment opportunities to students.

LTW is an in-depth job readiness and career exploration program designed to enhance the academic component of select Young Adult Borough Centers and Transfer High Schools. LTW aims to help students overcome obstacles that stand in the way of earning a high school diploma and lead them toward rewarding post-secondary employment and education.

To participate, students must be enrolled at one of the Young Adult Borough Centers or Transfer Schools where Learning to Work is offered.

"Transfer High Schools"

Transfer High Schools are small, academically challenging high schools for young adults ages 15 to 21 who are behind on academic credits.

To go to a Transfer High School, you must have completed at least one year in regular high school. Each school sets its own admission requirements and may have additional rules.
