You can donate to the New York Cares Coat Drive. Homeless shelters, community organizations, and groups assisting people in need will distribute the coats.
Due to COVID-19, New York Cares is encouraging participants to take their collections online this year and donate towards the cost of purchasing a new coat. Every $20 provides a coat for a New Yorker in need.
You can donate new or gently used coats directly to community partners. Use the Coat Drive drop-off map to find partners near you accepting donations, the kinds of coats they need, and contact information.
Before donating used coats, follow these safety guidelines provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):
- Wash coats in soap and water
- Dry clean at the highest temperature possible without damaging the coat
- Store coats in a dark plastic bag or box to reduce contact
