All stores in New York City, regardless of size, cannot leave their doors or windows open while air conditioning is running.

Chain stores—stores with five or more locations in the City—must also post a sign on all exterior doors where customers can see it that says you can report violations of the Air Conditioning Law to 311.

Download the Air Conditioning Law Sign.

To file a complaint about stores that violate the law or don’t post the required sign, visit the Store Doors Open with Air Conditioner On page.
