Wednesday, January 1st is New Year's Day.

All government offices are closed, including:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
  • City and State Courts
  • Social Security offices
  • Post offices

There will be no mail delivery.

Alternate Side Parking (street cleaning) rules are suspended.

You do not have to pay the parking meter.

No stopping, no standing, and no parking regulations are suspended, except where those regulations are in effect anytime or seven days a week.

There is no garbage, organics, or recycling collection on Wednesday, January 1st.

If Wednesday is your regular garbage, organics, or recycling collection day, place your items curbside after 4 PM on Wednesday, January 1st for collection beginning Thursday, January 2nd. 

In some areas, your items may not be picked up until your next collection day.

All NYC public schools are closed from Monday, December 23rd through Wednesday, January 1st for Winter Recess. Students return to school on Thursday, January 2nd, 2020.

P311 (Parent Support Hotline) and Family Welcome Centers, including enrollment centers, are closed on Tuesday, December 31st and Wednesday, January 1st.

Parking in School Zones

Parking is allowed in school zones when school is in recess. However, specific schools may be open on holidays, and parking restrictions would remain in effect. You should contact specific schools to verify that they are in recess. Use School Finder to get contact information for a school.

The Staten Island Ferry runs on a holiday schedule with service provided every 30 minutes from 7 AM to midnight.

In addition, there will be no lower-level boarding in St. George Terminal.

All branches of the City's Public Library systems are closed.
